School Bus Acciden

Three school bus passengers seated across from the impact area were fatally injured; one was partially ejected. Two other passengers, one of whom was seated in the impact area, received serious injuries, and four passengers had minor injuries. The school bus driver and the truck driver both sustained minor injuries.

Every day during the school year hundreds of thousands of school buses transport America's children to and from school throughout the nation. Although school buses are generally a safe mode of public transportation, there are situations where the improper maintenance/operation of these vehicles have resulted in serious injury or death to innocent passengers and motorists.

According to the NHTSA, since 1991 there have been about 406,000 fatal traffic crashes. Of these, 0.33 percent (1,337) was classified as school transportation related. Since 1991, 1,479 people have died in school transportation related crashes, an average of 134 fatalities per year.

Most of the people who lost their lives in these crashes (68 percent), were occupants of other vehicles involved. Non-occupants (pedestrians, bicyclists, etc.) accounted for 23 percent of the deaths, and occupants of school transportation vehicles accounted for 9 percent.

Since 1991, 210 school-age pedestrians (less than 19 years old) have died in school transportation-related crashes. Nearly two-thirds (64 percent) were killed by school buses, 5 percent by vehicles functioning as school buses and 30 percent by other vehicles involved in the crashes. One-half of all school-aged pedestrians killed in school bus-related crashes were between the ages of 5 and 7.
